It’s the beginning of September. The days are getting shorter, the light is becoming more slanted, and the first signs of a storm are dancing among the peaks of the Dolomites. A photographer, laden with gear, sets off on the trail that winds around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The air is electric, the wind caresses the rocks and carries with it the scent of impending rain.
The photographer, a seasoned and solitary individual, is here to capture the raw and wild beauty that precedes a thunderstorm. He isn’t scared, but excited. With every step, the sky changes. The intense blue of the afternoon gives way to shades of gray and purple. The clouds pile up, drawing menacing and majestic shapes above the peaks. The Tre Cime, imposing and silent, seem to be awaiting the arrival of the storm.
Halfway along the path, the photographer stops. The view is breathtaking. The trail opens up to a vast rocky basin, and right there, illuminated by a last ray of sun filtering through the clouds, stands a small refuge, like an oasis of peace in the midst of the turmoil. The photographer hadn’t expected to find it, but its presence seems like a sign, an invitation to stop before the sky unleashes its fury. He takes one last photo, capturing the dichotomy between the calm of the refuge and the imminent force of nature.
Then, he takes shelter, his heart filled with gratitude for the gift of that unique moment, knowing that the images he has captured will tell a story of beauty, respect, and pure, overwhelming emotion.
