🇬🇧 The Scent of Rain in the Woods of Comelico: My Mental Detox on the Trail to Rifugio Lunelli

There is a secret that the mountains of Comelico keep for those who dare, a secret revealed only when the sky decides to refresh the peaks of the Dolomites. I often hear tourists complaining about the rain, viewing it as an inconvenience that ruins plans. But if there is one thing I have learned while exploring this corner of the Upper Cadore, it is that a walk in the woods on a misty day is one of the most rejuvenating experiences I have ever had.
The other day, I was in Colesei, right on the trail that winds up toward Rifugio Lunelli, at the foot of the majestic Popera rock faces. Instead of letting the low clouds discourage me, I laced up my boots and stepped into that enchanted forest where proud firs and majestic beeches interlace high above, creating a natural canopy over my head. Away from the crowded routes of sunny days, I discovered that the wet woods of Comelico transform into a true open-air spa.

The Magic of My Senses: Between Petrichor and Moss in Colesei

The first benefit I feel in these places is always immediate, and it comes through my sense of smell. As soon as raindrops hit the Dolomite soil, petrichor is released into the air—that ancestral scent of wet earth that instinctively relaxes my nervous system. Step by step, as I make my way toward the mountain hut, I let myself be enveloped by the intense, earthy aroma of wet moss covering the rocks and the sweet resin of the firs. It is an ancient scent that smells of cleanliness to me, of a wild, living nature renewing itself.

What Happens to My Body and Soul

Walking in the rain toward Rifugio Lunelli is not just poetic to me; it is truly therapeutic:

  • I breathe the purest Comelico air: Rain cleanses the atmosphere, washing away dust and pollen. I feel that every deep breath among the trees floods my lungs with pure oxygen and phytoncides (natural compounds released by plants), giving my immune system a welcome boost.
  • I listen to healing sounds: The rhythmic tapping of raindrops on beech leaves and fir needles creates a natural “white noise” that instantly silences my mental chatter and drastically reduces accumulated stress.
  • I look at vibrant colors: Without the blinding glare of the sun, the green of the moss and the grey of the Dolomite rock in Colesei become incredibly vivid, almost magical. It is a feast for my eyes, a true relief from screen fatigue.
My Traveler’s Tip: When hiking up to Rifugio Lunelli on a rainy day, do what I do: put on a good waterproof jacket, sturdy trekking shoes with great grip for the damp paths, and leave your phone in your pocket. Give yourself the luxury of listening to the forest breathe. And once you reach the hut, warm up with the traditional flavors of Cadore cuisine.

For me, walking in the rain in Comelico doesn’t mean “wasting a vacation day” at all—it means finding a deeper, wilder, and more authentic connection with the mountains. The next time you see clouds gathering over Colesei, simply lace up your boots and let yourself be restored.
